McClatchy Media Misleads (Yet Again)

| The McClatchy Company, which operates 29 newspapers across 14 states – including the Charlotte Observer, Raleigh News & Observer, and Durham Herald-Sun – can be reliably counted on to mislead, censor, obfuscate and even fabricate, all to pursue its leftist agenda. Sunday’s “Idea exchange or corporate lobbying front? A look into ALEC’s influence in NC” was no exception.

In a hit piece vilifying the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), through which conservative lawmakers harmonize model legislation for state legislatures, McClatchy attacked your ability to effectively defend yourself in your home, your motor vehicle, and your workplace
Claiming that North Carolina’s “Castle Doctrine” and “Stand Your Ground” laws were the product of ALEC’s evil agenda, the piece said:
“2011 House Bill 650, Castle Doctrine: This controversial law allowed property owners to legally use deadly force on intruders with no obligation to retreat. Large parts of the law are taken straight from ALEC’s now-retracted Castle Doctrine Act, which was based on Florida’s 2005 “Stand Your Ground” law. After the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in 2012, ALEC’s support for the law came under scrutiny, leading to nearly 400 legislators and 60 corporations cutting their ties with the organization. ALEC later announced that it was ‘refocusing; on promoting business and economic laws, and shying away from cultural issues.’”
In truth, ALEC played no role in passing HB 650, which was actually drafted and shepherded through the NC General Assembly by the organization I direct, Grass Roots North Carolina…
