SHERIFF RECOMMENDATIONS

This is the first election year in which the GRNC Political Victory Fund has made recommendations in sheriff races. Unfortunately, a large number of candidates and limited resources have required us to focus on just a few races. We also had a number of races in which no candidate returned GRNC’s candidate survey.

CUMBERLAND CO: Incumbent “Moose” Butler (D) has been drawing complaints from gun owners and scored only 81% on GRNC’s candidate survey, giving him a 3-star GRNC evaluation (***). Challenger Charlie Baxley (R) scored a near-perfect 96% on GRNC’s candidate survey, giving him GRNC’s highest 4-star (****) evaluation and indicating he will be responsive to gun owners. GRNC-PVF recommends you VOTE CHARLIE BAXLEY FOR CUMBERLAND COUNTY SHERIFF.

HALIFAX CO: Unfortunately, Republican James Warren scored only 73% (GRNC **) on GRNC’s candidate survey, indicating hostility to gun rights and unwillingness to issue pistol purchase permits or to sign Form 4s for Title II firearms. By contrast, Democrat Wes Tripp scored an excellent 94% (GRNC ****) on GRNC’s survey, indicating he is a friend of gun rights. GRNC-PVF recommends you VOTE WES TRIPP FOR HALIFAX COUNTY SHERIFF.

IREDELL COUNTY: This one is a bit tougher. Republican Darren Campbell scored a poor 78% (GRNC **) on his GRNC candidate survey, indicating indifference to gun issues. His website professes strong support for the Second Amendment, but tends to focus on prosecution of gun crimes. Democrat Rick Ervin scored an excellent 94% (GRNC****) and appears to be the better choice, but with a caveat: Although in his survey Ervin indicated support for signing federal paperwork for Title II firearms, email communications with his campaign staff indicate he has concerns about signing for suppressors. GRNC-PVF recommends you VOTE FOR RICK ERVIN FOR IREDELL COUNTY SHERIFF, but also suggests you contact him to clarify his position on Title II firearms.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY: Irwin Carmichael is a concealed handgun instructor who has already begun streamlining Mecklenburg County’s cumbersome purchase permit and concealed handgun permit application processes as a sheriff’s deputy, and vows to continue doing so as sheriff. Moreover, he has indicated he will sign Form 4s for Title II firearms – the first Mecklenburg sheriff to do so in recent memory. With a perfect 100% GRNC survey score, Carmichael earned GRNC’s highest four-star (****) evaluation. By contrast, opponent Chris Haley failed to return GRNC’s survey, earning only a 0-star (0) evaluation. GRNC-PVF recommends you VOTE FOR IRWIN CARMICHAEL FOR MECKLENBURG COUNTY SHERIFF.
