You may recall that back in February, GRNC broke the story about “Something Bruin.” This was an operation where NC Wildlife Resource Commission (NCWRC) officers and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) agents teamed up to storm family homes in full battle regalia, and arrest several hunters on bear poaching charges. Soon after, it became clear that many of the charges were probably bogus, and that entrapment likely played a major role in the arrests. Something was “bruin,” but much more so, something was fishy.

Thankfully, GRNC supporters like you teamed up with GRNC President Paul Valone to shed light on this injustice. The messages that you sent to Governor McCrory and Senator Burr kept this nefarious operation from being swept under the rug. That, and the fact that Congressman Mark Meadows has also blown the whistle, and called for a federal investigation. Now, a report by Atlanta’s WSB-TV makes it clear that there truly is good reason to be suspicious of the government agents involved, and indeed of the entire “Something Bruin” operation.

Investigation is Needed

Heavily armed government agents storming family homes, entrapment, and false charges. This sounds an awful lot like another “Ruby Ridge,” right here in North Carolina. Give all that, one would assume that an intense investigation of “Something Bruin” was already underway. However, NC Attorney General Roy Cooper has yet to launch one. Although such a glaring case should not require it, the Attorney General apparently needs some encouragement to launch an investigation, like the one now being considered in Georgia (the other state caught up in "Something Bruin"). Below, you’ll see what you can do to encourage Roy Cooper to investigate the ominous actions taken by government agents against peaceful North Carolina citizens and their families.

  • E-mail NC Attorney General Roy Cooper. Use the suggested message below to insist that he launch an investigation into “Something Bruin.”

  • Phone NC Attorney General Roy Cooper. Insist that he conduct an investigation of “Something Bruin.” Tell him that you’d like to know why government storm troopers were allowed to terrorize the families, including children, of peaceful North Carolinians, over what appear to be trumped up charges, without an immediate investigation. Questions must be answered and justice must be served. Ask him if he will promise to conduct a full investigation of “Something Bruin.”

Suggested Subject: "Investigate ‘Something Bruin’"

Dear Attorney General Cooper,

You’re likely aware of the tumult surrounding the undercover operation named “Something Bruin,” a joint operation between the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission (NCWRC), and the United States Forest Service (USFS). I am writing to insist that your office immediately begin a full investigation into this operation.

Strong evidence suggests that the NCWRC officers and USFS agents used unseemly and illegal tactics during the execution of "Something Bruin." Entrapment, poaching conducted by the agents themselves, and storm trooper-style raids on the homes of citizens are the most glaring examples of these tactics. By all appearances, North Carolina citizens have been wronged, and agents of the state have abused their power.

With such glaring evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Federal and state agents, within the borders of North Carolina, it is the job of the state’s Attorney General to investigate, find the truth, and insure that justice is properly administered. Anything less would be a great disservice to the people you serve.

Please do the right thing and launch an investigation into "Something Bruin." I will continue to monitor this issue via alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.
