The Council voted 5-4 in favor of violating rights

and breaking state law...

Six votes were required for immediate passage.  The ordinance will be considered again during the next Council meeting scheduled for March 6, at 5:30.  It appears that a second majority vote will result in adoption of the ordinance.

Council misinterprets state law to fit anti-gun agenda

According to media reports, the Greensboro city council claims that they may ban guns within entire parks that contain recreational facilities. This is not true. The law permits limited bans in very-narrowly defined park areas specifically including ONLY; a playground, an athletic field, a swimming pool, and an athletic facility.

Police Chief and Parks Director claim you don't need to defend yourself

Media reports quote Greensboro Parks and Recreation Director Greg Jackson as saying "I've been in this business 20 years and have had zero incidences where someone needed to protect themselves with a gun in the park." Greensboro Police Chief Ken Miller has been quoted making similar statements. Maybe the Chief and Mr. Jackson don't subscribe to the local paper and have missed the news that Greensboro has one of the highest crime rates in NC. Is there some reason to believe that parks are immune to violent crime?

Here are a few examples of what Greensboro leaders are trying to claim cannot happen:

City Council to further increase Greensboro crime by promoting illegal ordinance

Maybe it makes sense that crime in Greensboro is so high given its leadership is so willing to contribute to it, with the Police Chief's approval. It appears that we need to clarify once again that the City Council will be OFFENDERS if they succeed in passing their illegal ordinance.

  • The others need a dose of reality
  • Bans outside of specified areas are illegal
  • Complying with state law is as simple as rescinding park bans
  • Greensboro is a dangerous city
  • Citizens have a Constitutional Right to bear arms

Dear Council Members:

I urge you to respect and OBEY the new law allowing honest and law abiding citizens the right to self protection within parks. It is clear where you MUST allow Concealed Carry holders the right of self protection.

Your city ranks as one of the most dangerous in our state. Claims that citizens don't need an effective means of self-defense EVERYWHERE in Greensboro simply does not make sense.

The ordinance that you are currently considering is illegal. What message will you send to your city by willingly and intentionally violating state law?

Respect my right to self protection in what are often dangerous locations. I will be monitoring your actions via Grass Roots North Carolina legislative alerts.

Respectfully,

A Gun-Owning NC Voter
