OPPORTUNITY IN THE SENATE

The veto-proof NC Senate has an opportunity to do what the House supermajority didn’t have the fortitude to do: move a strong version of H562 .…

As you probably remember from previous GRNC alerts on this topic, the Republican supermajority in the NC House failed to pass a strong version of H562 (“Amend Firearms Laws”). The robust version of the bill was written to end the shameful Jim Crow-era Pistol Purchase Permit (PPP) system, and also to protect patients from being speciously questioned about guns during routine doctor visits.

Unfortunately, after attempting to kill the bill all-together, the anti-gun Republicans, joined by Democrats, succeeded in putting the kibosh on the previously mentioned common sense reforms. In the end, the House passed a severely weakened version of H562. Surely, a weakened version of a pro-gun bill is better than no bill at all, but it was infuriating to watch the veto-proof Republican supermajority ignore the pro-gun rights voters who “brung ‘em to the dance.” Instead they did the bidding of the powerful NC Sheriffs’ Association and the NC Medical Society.

The Senate Can Fix the House’s Mistake

Fortunately, there is still hope for an appropriately strong version of H562 now that it has moved to the Senate. One would assume that it takes zero fortitude for politicians to do what their constituents expect them to do, particularly on issues so prominent in politicians’ campaign speeches, and in their party’s platform. For these reasons, gun rights advocates might expect Republicans in the NC Senate to strengthen H562, and move it toward final passage without any prompting.

Although gun rights voters should expect the Senate to improve and move H562 without prompting, it is just a fact that politicians need constant encouragement, and it may not happen without constituent reinforcement. Please help us send that much needed inspiration to those who now have this great opportunity. Below, see how you can easily send a message to the NC Senate, insisting they utilize H562 to repeal the outdated and embarrassing Jim Crow Pistol Purchase Permit system, and restore gun-rights reforms in a strong version of H562, and that they move the bill toward passage.

Phone Message for Senators:

I am a pro-gun rights voter who helped give the Republicans their veto-proof supermajority. I am infuriated that House members have so weakened H562, and I am calling to insist that my senator work to re-strengthen H562 by repealing the Jim Crow Pistol Permit system, and by returning the other reforms that the House unwisely removed. Once the bill is strengthened, I expect you to make sure it moves toward passage. Thank you.

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE

Suggested Subject: "Re-Strengthen and Pass H562"

Dear Senator:

It was infuriating to see the NC House weaken H562 (“Amend Firearms Laws”) before passing it. I would have hoped that the House’s supermajority, given to them in large part by gun voters, would have preserved the bill’s original language, which was in line with the representatives’ pro-gun campaign language.

Although the NC House disappointed its constituents, the Republican Senate now has a great opportunity to convert its pro-Second Amendment posture into action by re-strengthening, and then passing, H562.

Pro-gun rights voters are largely responsible for the veto-proof supermajority that the NC Senate currently enjoys. With this in mind, I insist that you work to return the repeal of the shameful Jim Crow Pistol Purchase Permit System to H562. Please restore the other reforms that the House also unwisely removed, such as the provision that protects children from being interrogated about parents’ firearms during routine doctor visits.

It’s unfortunate that the NC House has bowed to pressure from professional lobbyists rather than the state’s grassroots. Yet, it is very encouraging to know that the Senate now has a wonderful opportunity to right that wrong, stand sturdy for their constituents, and bring North Carolina’s gun laws into line with a platform of individual freedom and personal responsibility.

Please strengthen H562 and move it toward passage. I will continue to monitor this issue through legislative alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Respectfully,
