SHERIFF ENCOURAGES ARMED CITIZENRY

It’s a phrase that you’ve probably heard many times: “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.” Of course, this is not a criticism of police officers, but simply a cold, hard fact of reality. The technology to instantly “beam” law enforcement into the heart of an emergency isn’t quite there yet, and on Monday, Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins acknowledged this reality. During a public discussion on a recent spike in crime rates, the Sheriff explicitly recognized and reinforced the fact that, in emergencies, citizens are their own first-responders. Specifically, Sheriff Rollins said:

“Even though I’m a cop, I don’t go anywhere without a gun. I want my deputies to get there just as fast as they possibly can if you’ve got a problem. But you better be able to take care of business before we get there if you need to protect your family."

Most reasonable adults already know that they must take personal responsibility for their own family’s safety. Yet, there are still some who need reminding, and for taking on the task of reminding them, we sincerely thank Sheriff Rollins. His plain-spoken recognition and support for the armed citizen who is prepared to “take care of business” when his or her family is in danger is a refreshing dose of reality in a world where the truth is often carefully evaded.

As we all tip our hats to Sheriff Rollins, we must also wonder about the other ninety-nine Sheriffs in North Carolina. Are they all as supportive of the responsible, armed citizen? Will they acknowledge the moral authority of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their families in the midst of urgent life or death situations? It would be nice to find out.

Below, you’ll see how you can easily thank Sheriff Rollins for his refreshing public statement regarding gun ownership. Also below, you’ll see how you can contact your own county’s sheriff to ask him if his feet are planted as firmly on the ground, and if he is just as supportive of gun rights. Let’s give credit where credit is due, let’s find out who else deserves credit, and let’s also find out who might warrant a bit more scrutiny.

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE TO THANK SHERIFF ROLLINS

Suggested Subject: "Thank You for Supporting the Right to Self-Defense!"

Dear Sheriff Rollins:

I'm sending you this note to thank you for acknowledging gun ownership as the best means of self-defense in emergency situations. As you mentioned, when law-abiding citizens and their families are threatened, law enforcement is often unable to arrive in time to protect the innocent. Your recognition of the moral authority of law-abiding gun owners to protect themselves in the face of imminent danger did not go unnoticed, and it is greatly appreciated.

As a supporter of Grass Roots North Carolina, I will simply say: Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,

DELIVER SECOND MESSAGE TO YOUR SHERIFF

Suggested Subject: "Do You Stand with Sheriff Rollins?"

Dear Sheriff:

Earlier this week, while discussing rising crime rates, Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins, explicitly acknowledged the armed citizen as the best means of self-defense in emergency situations. He recognized that when law-abiding citizens and their families are threatened, law enforcement is often unable to arrive in time to protect the innocent. With this in mind, Sheriff Rollins voiced recognition of the law-abiding gun owner’s moral authority to protect his or her family in the face of imminent danger.

It was quite refreshing to hear such a thing from a law enforcement official in North Carolina. It seems an obvious truth, but unfortunately, it is not a truth that is acknowledged by everyone. This caused me to wonder where you stand on this question. You are the elected Sheriff of my county, and I’m wondering if you agree with Sheriff Rollins. Do you believe that law-abiding citizens have a right to use firearms for legitimate self-defense when there is immediate danger? Will you acknowledge that law enforcement can’t be everywhere at once, and therefore encourage all responsible citizens to arm themselves for the protection of their families?

When you have a free moment, I hope you will respond to my questions, as I am legitimately interested in your answers. In the meantime, I will continue to keep myself informed on such issues via alerts from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Sincerely,
