 The November elections are just around the corner. Our work to evaluate the massive number of candidates in local, state, and national elections is now complete and ready to help you support freedom at the polls. As the speeches and stops on the campaign trail increase, how can we know where a candidate stands on important Second Amendment issues?

 As we all know, there are many cases in which a politician will say one thing on the campaign trail, yet vote in a very different direction once in office. It is vitally important to have honest, truthful evaluations of candidates who are running for office. But due to “deals” made over pending legislation, evaluations and guides are sometimes worthless in terms of honestly representing candidates.

Can I trust a voter guide for accuracy?

While other organizations are releasing guides, can you really trust them? For years, the NRA has released ratings that seem legitimate on the face, but when examined closer, often fall short. In many cases, the NRA ratings inflate evaluations of candidates who actively work against gun rights. For example:

 Some years ago, Republican Ham Horton challenged incumbent Democrat Ted Kaplan for his state senate seat. Kaplan had an extensive record of supporting anti-gun legislation, including the “assault weapon” ban, handgun registration, and a one-gun-a-month law. In contrast, Horton recognized that banning semi-automatic sporting rifles because of cosmetic features was absurd. He held the Second Amendment in high esteem – in contrast to Kaplan’s indifference to the Founding Father’s intent.

Imagine our shock as the race tightened and the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action issued their candidate ratings: Kaplan’s been upgraded from a “C” to an “A.” Adding insult to injury, the NRA endorsed Kaplan and mailed election alerts for him into the district. Worse, it endorsed equally anti-gun Marvin Ward over Mark McDaniel.

 Later endorsements of anti-gun politicians included Senator Marc Basnight, Sen. Fountain Odom, House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman, Governor Mike Easley, Congressman Larry Kissell, and many others.

GRNC has a better way

 The evaluations for each candidate in local, state, and national elections conducted and released by GRNC are based solely on how the candidate voted on Second Amendment issues, what gun-related legislation they introduced while in office, what actions they took while gun legislation bills were in their committees, and how they answered candidate surveys sent to them by GRNC earlier in the year…or if they bothered to answer them at all. That’s it! No other factors are used for evaluations. What you see is how they compare on Second Amendment issues only.

GRNC doesn’t make “deals” for candidate evaluations
. Evaluations in our “Remember in November” guide are an objective assessment of candidates’ stance on gun issues. A candidate gets what he or she earns -- no more, no less.

GRNC candidate evaluations are now available online at:

For maximum utility, they are organized either alphabetically, allowing you to research a particular candidate, or by district/race, allowing you to compare candidates in a single district. Instructions give you not only the key to understanding GRNC candidate evaluations, but crucial election information on voter registration, early voting and more.

What you can expect in coming weeks

Soon, GRNC will be distributing up to 150,000 “Remember in November” voter guides to gun owners in North Carolina, and via businesses that support your Second Amendment rights. The voter guides will accurately display how candidates in your district and in national elections were scored. Use the guide to prepare a sample ballot to guide your voting at the November polls.

 This election cycle will have a huge impact for gun owners in terms of battling anti-gun legislation slated to be introduced in the upcoming legislative session. It is crucial that we have the right candidates in place when it’s time to vote on these very important bills. Additionally, it has been estimated that the next President of the United States will name up to three new Supreme Court Justices. It is important that we have someone in office that will not load the nation’s highest court with anti-gun Justices, resulting in devastating setbacks in terms of Second Amendment issues.

 Don’t let a faulty guide on these important issues direct you to vote for the wrong politicians!

Doing our part

 Thanks to GRNC’s “Remember in November” project, North Carolina gun voters will know exactly where candidates stand. But to make that happen, and to enable GRNC to impact the 2012 elections, you must do four things:

  • Register friends and acquaintances and bring them to the polls;
  • If you received a green postcard, asking you to help distribute voter guides, return it promptly and then distribute the guides you receive;
  • Join GRNC and keep your membership current and;
  • Contribute generously to the GRNC Political Victory Fund (GRNC-PVF), GRNC’s federally-registered political action committee.

 With your help, GRNC can make a difference in the coming elections. By supporting GRNC, GRNC-PVF and helping to distribute voter guides, you can help insure that only the candidates worthy of trust will be elected in November.
